It’s Christmas Day and I’ve just eaten a truck load of chocolate and probably crammed enough food into my belly during lunch to feed a small town. Why am I posting a ski fitness video now? I must be insane!! The thought of jumping around in a gym is giving me a belly ache. However come tomorrow, after the effects of the Christmas feast have subsided, I will be champing at the bit to get back on the fitness trail. Getting fit to me isn’t a destination. It’s a journey. How far you travel along the path is a personal choice. Sometimes you pull into a lay-by for a while or take a wrong turn. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily as long as it doesn’t last too long!! Maybe it actually helps to reset mind and body. Anyway, the important thing for me is to turn round and get headed back in the right direction revitalised and with more vigour and determination than before. Being totally selfish, I want to be able to ski for as many years as possible. I would love to turn into an old dude that rips up the mountain well into my 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.
Skiing requires a combination of physical attributes: balance, coordination, agility, strength, power and flexibility. It is therefore a good idea to work on ski specific exercises that focus on these aspects. The first video relates to Balance, Coordination and Agility. I hope you find it useful. I have included the below picture of a cross country race I took part in when I worked at Silver Star Mountain, BC Canada. Nordic Skiing (Cross Country) requires all six of the physical attributes listed above in bucket loads!!!
If you have any ski related fitness ideas you want to share please feel free. I am always on the look out for new training methods.
(Note: I will create a new post for all the fitness related videos I upload. This means they will appear on my home page. I will also put the imbedded videos on the Ski Fitness Page so that you have them all located in one place so you can refer to them easily. These will also be on my YouTube Channel Skischooltv – please stop by and take a look from time to time. If you click the subscribe button on the YouTube Channel everytime a new fitness or technique video is posted you will be notified via email).
